WHO Confronts Significant Staff Reduction After United States Funding Pullout

This international health organization disclosed plans to reduce its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to more than 2,000 positions – by mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Triggers Substantial Reorganization

This decision comes following the US, formerly the agency's largest contributor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

Washington had been contributing about 18% of the agency's total funding, creating a substantial financial gap.

Projected Staff Reductions

Based on internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

The reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, retirements, and natural departures.

"This year has been one of the most difficult in our history, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary process of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's director-general.

Budget Gap Remains

This Switzerland-headquartered body currently confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing nearly a quarter of its required budget.

This amount marks an reduction from a previous projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.

Not Included Funding

These financial projections exclude a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.

The spokesperson for the agency noted that the current unfunded portion of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in previous periods, attributing this to several reasons:

  • A smaller total budget
  • The launch of a new donor outreach campaign
  • An increase in participating countries' required fees

The restructuring process is now nearing its end, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
