United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with Eleven Nations
The UK Foreign Office has included 11 new destinations to its official advisory roster concerning the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
The revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.
Only last month, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to multiple notable incidents such as the deadly loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for drinking.
While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to detect.

Foreign Office official the minister stated that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.
