Saved Ukrainian Lioness Receives Essential Dental Operation

An adolescent female lion rescued from war-torn the war zone has undergone vital oral operation to extract a severely infected canine tooth caused by an infection.
Lira arrived at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, England on 14 March following a fundraising effort by managing director Cam Whitnall, who raised £500,000 to support her and four other rescued lions.

The procedure was carried out on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"Upon inspecting Lira's jaw and mouth, I could see immediately the broken tooth was severely infected," stated the dentist.
He thought the infection was caused by a trauma sustained over twelve months back, causing germs creating toxins inside the tooth.
"My philosophy is animal dental problems need to be treated in the safest, the least invasive and most secure manner," he explained.
The expert clarified that as the lioness no longer required to hunt for food, extraction was the most "sensible and ethical solution."

The sanctuary reported the removed fang was 3.14 inches in length, with the dentist having to remove a pocket of pus from beneath the tooth and seal the significant opening with multiple absorbable stitches.
He additionally conducted a dental procedure on the corresponding top fang, which was also found to be infected.
The curator, curator at the facility, said the procedure was a "total triumph."
She said the team had spotted "a small lump on the lioness's face" but it had been impossible to determine "how serious the condition was."
"Lira will be a little uncomfortable to begin with, but now that the toxins are removed from her system, she will begin improving over the coming days," commented Ms Smith.
The successful surgery marks a major milestone in the lioness's healing process after her rescue from Ukraine.
