Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
