The sport of boxing has been a real slump this period, with a scarcity of big events and markedly reduced engaging contests than normal. The anticipation of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the struggling sport. The victor will almost certainly face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In stark contrast, the loser is likely to lament the inevitable erosion of their gained recognition.

Parker finds himself on a impressive streak since his last defeat to opponent Joe Joyce three years previously. The Kiwi veteran, who won a world title in 2016, has been rejuvenated by his switch of trainers to the influential Andy Lee. The Understated Allure of The Two Boxers

The low-key appeal of the two boxers is enhanced by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a world title shot. Yet each has weaknesses. This is Parker’s 40th fight and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by multiple challengers. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than any fighter he's fought – with the exclusion of Wilder who looked a shell of a knockout artist when Parker secured a one-sided points victory in late 2023.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only started boxing when he was 20 years old, had zero amateur background and has always had to overcome doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a shot at the title.

“This is the most significant fight, right now, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have taken a risk when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was injured. Parker insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he only had to wait for his opportunity. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and what he has done and the way he's trained for this bout. But I am on a superior tier and I am going to show it on fight night.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be the same. The gap between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his resume. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a while and had several tough bouts. I too have faced intense battles and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a significantly more of those compared to me.”

The Concluding Analysis

But the suspicion remains that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the belief that he is the prime candidate for the champion Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
