New England Warming More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.

The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a rapid change. New research finds that New England is heating up more quickly than nearly any other place on the Earth.

Unprecedented Pace of Change

The rate of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, according to the research. The rate of its warming has apparently increased notably in the past five years.

"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."

The research positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating zones in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher added.

Study Methodology and Findings

For the study, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of the New England region.

They discovered that New England has heated up by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by approximately 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.

"That is very fast heating, which is concerning," said the study author.

Notable Climate Patterns

  • Nighttime temperatures are increasing more quickly than daytime temperatures.
  • Winters are heating up at double the speed of other times of year.
  • The severe cold New England is known for is being diminished.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A major reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.

In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.

"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that energy."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme weather shocks in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged drought.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:

  • Maple syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
  • Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or relocated multiple times due to a lack of ice.
  • Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snowfall.

"I reside just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
