Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
