Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Secure Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted through the stadium as Nottingham Forest followers celebrated another result against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s winning header secured the continental trophy back in 1979, but the club continue to cherish those glorious moments. Equally, major changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team looking reinvigorated and earning a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Another Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the game itself was free of any real jeopardy or jitters.

This was an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

The home side leaned into the history, paying tribute to the legends of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a meal together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing reception when they gathered on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the home stand.

Recalling History

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a large banner, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was unfurled as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. Another brilliant tifo showed Brian Clough watching events beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside two minutes and established a two-goal advantage by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined Forest aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense led by their own homegrown skipper, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.

Second Strike Seals Dominance

The scorer was implicated in the team's second goal on the brink of half-time, too, his unmarked header parried by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the rebound from close range. McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and only his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was deflected aside off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked the defender had earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalie Olsen.

Opponent's Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a effort on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the side that stunned the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for Forest

It turned out to be a flawless night for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the match already boxed off and later brought on 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche talked about the club legends providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop showed they are capable of producing of thrills, as well.
