The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
