Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
