Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. will invest fifteen billion dollars to build an AI data hub in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, which will be set up in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will become a component of Google's international system of AI centres distributed over twelve different countries.
"It stands as the greatest AI facility that we are committing funds to worldwide, excluding the United States," Google Cloud's chief executive stated at an conference in Delhi, the national capital recently, noting that the funding will be spread across the coming five years.
This declaration occurs when President Trump of the United States has been encouraging companies from the United States to give priority to investments within the country.
The Expanding Position of India in AI Infrastructure
The nation has risen as a prime location for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and quickly expanding internet user base have made it a center for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for tech giants.
"This center will introduce our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in the nation, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress nationwide," stated Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
Project Details
An official contract to complete the initiative is set to be signed on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government confirmed.
"This represents a significant advancement for the digital progression of our state, innovation, and global standing," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will merge AI and cloud systems with green energy infrastructure and an broader fiber-optic system.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The project forms part of the state government's plan to create 6GW of data centre capacity by 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that accommodate the computer and network hardware that companies use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
They contain servers, storage systems and connectivity devices like firewalls and routers, in addition to the necessary power and cooling systems to function properly.
Funding Benefits
Across Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been granting discounted land and energy to draw global investors.
Sector Expansion
India's data centre industry has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, crossing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 capacity.
